“Then the angel showed me the rive of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing the fruit of each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.” Revelations 22:1-2 (NRSV)

The sanctuary of Hillcrest christian Church (Disciples of Christ) features exquisitely executed images from the Holy Bible. These include the Good Shepherd (above the altar) and the Last Supper (south transept). On May 15, 2011, our newest addition was added to the sanctuary; an artistic rendering of The Tree of Life (Rev. 22:2).

Hillcrest Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) celebrates its roots as a “reaching out” congregation, extending its hands of fellowship to people across national, racial, political, social and religious boundaries. The Tree of Life project is a bold statement on the significance of our relationship with each other. It is an affirmation of our belief that God calls us to be connected to one another. Even when the time comes for us to part, our connectedness continues through out fond memories of each other, as well as the occasions enriched by our participation.

As a community of faith, we recognize that we are specially blessed by our fellowship with so many people…whether in the past or in the present…whether here at Hillcrest or in other circumstances. They have contributed to the fruitfulness of our journey of faith – just like what the tree of life mentioned in the Book of Revelation – blessedly bountiful and nurturing. It is our hope that future generations who will feel the call of God to come to Hillcrest would find them blessed as they stand before the Tree of Life and learn from the profound message of every leaf, seemingly simple as it may appear.

The Tree of Life is a project of the Board of Trustees. Proceeds from this project will be used towards the maintenance of this historically rich sanctuary.
